The Concept of the Ten Gods

The Ten Gods are calculated by comparing your Day Master's element with each of the other Heavenly Stems and hidden stems in your chart. There are five possible elemental relationships: Same Element, Element I Produce, Element That Produces Me, Element I Control, and Element That Controls Me. Each relationship has two variations — same polarity and opposite polarity — giving us ten distinct "gods" or "stars."

These ten stars are not abstract labels but living descriptions of how energy flows in your life. For instance, the Eating God represents your creative output and pleasures, the Direct Officer represents authority and discipline, and the Direct Resource represents knowledge and support. Together, they paint a comprehensive portrait of your inner and outer world.

Understanding the Ten Gods transforms a BaZi chart from a collection of characters into a narrative — a story about who you are, what drives you, where your talents lie, and what challenges will shape your journey.

The Five Groups of Ten Gods

The Ten Gods naturally organize into five pairs, each representing a fundamental life domain:

• Companion Group (比劫): Friend (Bi Jian) and Rob Wealth (Jie Cai) — Same element as Day Master. Represents self, ego, peers, competition, and independence.
• Output Group (食傷): Eating God (Shi Shen) and Hurting Officer (Shang Guan) — Element produced by Day Master. Represents expression, creativity, talents, and performance.
• Wealth Group (財星): Indirect Wealth (Pian Cai) and Direct Wealth (Zheng Cai) — Element controlled by Day Master. Represents finances, assets, management ability, and (for men) romantic relationships.
• Authority Group (官星): Seven Killings (Pian Guan) and Direct Officer (Zheng Guan) — Element that controls Day Master. Represents career, reputation, discipline, pressure, and (for women) romantic relationships.
• Resource Group (印星): Indirect Resource (Pian Yin) and Direct Resource (Zheng Yin) — Element that produces Day Master. Represents knowledge, support, nurturing, education, and spiritual wisdom.

How to Identify the Ten Gods

To determine which Ten God a stem represents, first identify your Day Master's element and polarity. Then compare each other stem's element and polarity against it. Same polarity pairings produce the "indirect" or "biased" star; opposite polarity produces the "direct" or "proper" star.

For example, if your Day Master is Jia Wood (Yang Wood): another Yang Wood stem is the Friend star, a Yin Wood stem is Rob Wealth, Yang Fire is Eating God, Yin Fire is Hurting Officer, and so on. Modern BaZi calculators do this automatically, but understanding the underlying logic enriches your interpretation.

The Ten Gods appear not only through the visible Heavenly Stems but also through the hidden stems within each Earthly Branch. The stars derived from hidden stems reveal unconscious motivations, latent talents, and inner dynamics that complement the more visible stellar patterns.

Reading the Ten Gods in Your Chart

The distribution and balance of the Ten Gods in your chart reveal your core personality pattern. A chart dominated by Output stars (Eating God and Hurting Officer) suggests a highly creative, expressive individual. A chart heavy in Authority stars (Officer and Seven Killings) indicates someone driven by career, status, and social responsibility.

The Month Pillar's Ten God is traditionally considered the most influential — it often determines the chart's "structure" (格局, Gé Jú), which is the overarching theme of the person's life. When a new Ten God arrives through Luck Cycles or annual pillars, it shifts the life's focus and opens new chapters.

No star is inherently good or bad. Even challenging stars like Seven Killings or Hurting Officer can be tremendously positive when well-positioned and balanced. The art of BaZi lies in understanding how each star interacts with the chart as a whole.
