The character 行 (xíng) means "to move" or "to circulate." The Five Elements are not static materials but ever-changing, ever-cycling patterns of energy. Just as spring gives way to summer, seeds grow into towering trees, and water carves through rock over millennia, the Five Elements are always in motion.

In BaZi, every Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch in your chart belongs to one of these five elements. By analyzing the balance and interactions of elements in your chart, a skilled practitioner can reveal your innate personality, strengths, challenges, ideal career paths, health tendencies, and relationship patterns.

The Generating Cycle (Sheng Cycle)

The Generating Cycle — also called the Productive Cycle — describes how each element nourishes and gives birth to the next. It mirrors the nurturing chains found throughout nature, forming a harmonious circle of support and growth.

Wood feeds Fire (wood is fuel for flame). Fire creates Earth (ash returns to soil). Earth bears Metal (minerals form within the ground). Metal collects Water (metal surfaces attract condensation). Water nourishes Wood (rain and rivers sustain trees). In this way, the five elements form an eternal loop of creation.

In a BaZi chart, the generating relationship represents support, nurturing, and talent expression. The element that generates your Day Master acts as your resource and backing. The element your Day Master generates represents your creative output — the talents and ideas you bring into the world.

The Controlling Cycle (Ke Cycle)

The Controlling Cycle — also called the Destructive or Restraining Cycle — describes how each element checks and regulates another. Though it sounds negative, this cycle is essential for maintaining balance and preventing any single energy from spiraling out of control.

Wood controls Earth (roots penetrate and break up soil). Earth controls Water (embankments dam the flow). Water controls Fire (water extinguishes flames). Fire controls Metal (intense heat melts metal). Metal controls Wood (axes fell trees). Each element has both a source of support and a natural check.

In your BaZi chart, the controlling relationship represents challenges, discipline, and ambition. The element that controls your Day Master corresponds to the Officer stars — social pressure, authority, and career expectations. The element your Day Master controls corresponds to the Wealth stars — resources you must work to acquire. How to Read the Five Elements in Your Chart

A BaZi chart consists of four pillars: Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Each pillar has a Heavenly Stem on top and an Earthly Branch below, producing eight characters in total — this is why BaZi literally means "Eight Characters." Every one of these eight characters belongs to one of the five elements.

The Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar is called your Day Master (日主, Rì Zhǔ) — it is the single most important character in your chart, representing your core self. If your Day Master is Wood, you are a Wood person; if it is Fire, you are a Fire person. The remaining seven characters symbolize the people, resources, challenges, and opportunities that surround you.

Analyzing the distribution of elements in your chart reveals excesses and deficiencies. When one element dominates and another is absent, it suggests specific personality tendencies and life patterns. BaZi analysis never labels a chart as "good" or "bad" — it is about understanding your unique energetic landscape and learning to work with it wisely.

The Favorable Element (Yong Shen)
