Overview of the Twelve Earthly Branches

The twelve Earthly Branches cycle through time just as the twelve months cycle through the year and the twelve two-hour periods cycle through the day. They are: Zi (子), Chou (丑), Yin (寅), Mao (卯), Chen (辰), Si (巳), Wu (午), Wei (未), Shen (申), You (酉), Xu (戌), and Hai (亥). Each corresponds to one of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals.

Unlike the Heavenly Stems, which each carry a single elemental identity, the Earthly Branches are more complex. Each branch contains one or more "hidden stems" (藏干, Cáng Gān) — Heavenly Stems concealed within the branch like minerals embedded in rock. These hidden stems represent latent energies, unconscious drives, and deeper layers of personality and fate.

In your BaZi chart, the four Earthly Branches sit beneath the four Heavenly Stems, forming the lower half of each pillar. While the Stems represent the visible and outward, the Branches represent the hidden and internal. A complete chart reading requires understanding both levels.

Earthly Branches and the Chinese Zodiac

Each Earthly Branch is famously associated with a zodiac animal: Zi is the Rat, Chou the Ox, Yin the Tiger, Mao the Rabbit, Chen the Dragon, Si the Snake, Wu the Horse, Wei the Sheep, Shen the Monkey, You the Rooster, Xu the Dog, and Hai the Pig. These animal associations carry cultural and symbolic weight that enriches the reading.

However, in serious BaZi practice, the zodiac animal is just the surface layer. What matters far more is the elemental composition of each branch — its main element, its hidden stems, and how it interacts with other branches and stems in the chart. A skilled practitioner looks far beyond "Year of the Dragon" to read the actual energetic dynamics at play.

Hidden Stems (Cang Gan)

Each Earthly Branch contains between one and three hidden Heavenly Stems. The primary hidden stem represents the branch's dominant energy. Additional hidden stems represent secondary and residual energies — echoes of the transitional seasons and the complex layering of elemental forces.

For example, Yin (寅, Tiger) contains Jia Wood as its primary hidden stem, with Bing Fire and Wu Earth as secondary and residual stems. This means that beneath the surface of the Tiger branch lies not only strong Wood energy but also latent Fire and Earth — a rich, multi-layered energetic profile.

Hidden stems are crucial for calculating the Ten Gods in your chart. The stars derived from hidden stems reveal unconscious motivations, hidden talents, and the internal dynamics of each pillar — adding depth that the Heavenly Stems alone cannot provide.

Branch Interactions: Clashes, Combinations, and Punishments

The Earthly Branches interact through several important systems. The Six Clashes (六沖) occur between branches that sit directly opposite each other in the zodiac circle — Zi clashes with Wu, Chou with Wei, Yin with Shen, Mao with You, Chen with Xu, and Si with Hai. Clashes bring disruption, change, and the need to release old patterns.

The Six Combinations (六合) are harmonious pairings: Zi combines with Chou, Yin with Hai, Mao with Xu, Chen with You, Si with Shen, and Wu with Wei. These combinations can transform the elements involved, creating new dynamics in the chart. The Three Harmonies (三合) group branches into elemental triads that powerfully amplify a specific element.

There are also Punishments (刑), Destructions (破), and Harms (害) — each bringing its own flavor of challenge and transformation. These interactions activate during specific years, months, or Luck Cycles, creating periods of change, challenge, or opportunity in a person's life.
