What Are the Heavenly Stems?
The ten Heavenly Stems (天干, Tiān Gān) are the backbone of BaZi. Numbered from Jia (甲) to Gui (癸), these ten characters represent the Yin and Yang expressions of each of the Five Elements. Your Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar — is the single most important character in your entire chart, defining who you are at the deepest level.
Overview of the Ten Heavenly Stems
The Heavenly Stems are a set of ten characters that cycle through time, pairing with the twelve Earthly Branches to create the sixty-pillar cycle (Jia Zi cycle) used in all Chinese calendrical and metaphysical systems. Each stem belongs to one of the Five Elements and carries either Yang or Yin polarity, producing ten distinct archetypal energies.
The ten Heavenly Stems are: Jia (甲, Yang Wood), Yi (乙, Yin Wood), Bing (丙, Yang Fire), Ding (丁, Yin Fire), Wu (戊, Yang Earth), Ji (己, Yin Earth), Geng (庚, Yang Metal), Xin (辛, Yin Metal), Ren (壬, Yang Water), and Gui (癸, Yin Water). Together they encode the full spectrum of elemental expression.

Yang Stems vs. Yin Stems

The Day Master — Your Core Identity
Of the four Heavenly Stems in your chart, the Day Stem holds a unique position: it is you. Known as the Day Master (日主, Rì Zhǔ) or Day Lord, this stem defines your fundamental nature, temperament, and the way you engage with the world. Every other element in the chart is interpreted relative to this Day Master.
Your Day Master determines your elemental "tribe" — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water — and the specific archetype within that tribe (Yang or Yin). A Jia Wood Day Master faces the world like a great tree: principled, upright, and seeking to grow tall. A Yi Wood Day Master engages like a flowering vine: adaptive, charming, and finding strength in flexibility.

Heavenly Stem Combinations
The Heavenly Stems interact with each other through a system of combinations (合, hé). There are five specific pairings: Jia combines with Ji, Yi with Geng, Bing with Xin, Ding with Ren, and Wu with Gui. When two combining stems appear in adjacent pillars of a chart, they can merge and transform into a new element, fundamentally altering the chart dynamics.
These combinations represent powerful attractions — think of them as magnetic bonds between complementary energies. In life, they can manifest as deep relationships, career changes, or shifts in personality during specific Luck Cycles. A skilled practitioner always checks for stem combinations when reading a chart.
